An innovative approach to meet the challenge of patient adherence

It is estimated that 70 percent of patients who begin a pharmaceutical therapy discontinue it within one year.  Adherence to prescribed medications, particularly for long-term therapies, presents  a huge challenge.

There are many approaches to adherence and research seems to point that ‘one size does not fit all’.  The key according to WHO is to empower patients, developing understanding of their role in improving their health, and the importance of adhering to the treatment strategy.

After reviewing best practice approaches to adherence, we have developed a programme which combines a series of technologies centred on a cutting edge widget application.

The programme  is flexible / adaptable to therapy area, demographic groups and socioeconomic conditions. Key features of the programme  include:

  • Education on use of medicine, treatment strategy and disease area
  • Memory aids and reminders utilizing a range of communications channels including SMS and mobile devices
  • Continuous monitoring and management of symptoms combined with tailored call-to-action triggers
  • Behavioural and motivational interventions encouraging patients to incorporate drug adherence into their lifestyles
  • Support for caregivers and development of support networks
  • Collation of data using the interactive diary to support healthcare professional consultations.
